Alfonso William Martinez

July 29, 1955 -- December 08, 2025

Alfonso W. Martinez, Jr., known fondly as Al, Cool Al, or Lowie, passed away on December 8, 2025, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Born on July 29, 1955, in Alamosa, Colorado, Al lived a life defined by curiosity, connection, and an unmistakable love for people, culture, and adventure. Al graduated from Gallup High School in 1973 and went on to attend Colorado State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology. His professional journey began with the AT&SF Railroad, which took him to Barstow, California, before eventually leading him to Walnut Creek/San Francisco, where he built a long and successful career with Pacific Bell (now AT&T). Al dedicated over 35 years of service before retiring, leaving behind not just a legacy of hard work, but many lasting friendships. San Francisco and the Bay Area held a special place in Al’s heart. He loved its energy, history, and diversity, and delighted in sharing it with others, often playing tour guide to family and friends, proudly showcasing the city’s hidden gems, scenic views, and vibrant culture. After retirement, Al returned to New Mexico in 2017, reconnecting with his New Mexico and Colorado roots. Throughout his life, he embraced the outdoors with enthusiasm, finding joy in fishing, skiing, hiking, and long scenic drives simply to explore. A gifted photographer with a keen eye for beauty, Al often captured moments that reflected his appreciation for history, culture, art, and nature, especially the mountains and cool, open air he loved so much. Music was another constant companion. Al enjoyed jazz, old-school R&B, and the unmistakable sound of Santana. He was also a devoted Raiders fan and proud member of a local Raider Nation club in Albuquerque, where camaraderie and loyalty ran deep. Above all, Al cherished his family and his friends. He was deeply interested in their lives, always supportive of their dreams and successes. Social by nature, he loved spending time together, whether over a cup of coffee, fine dining, or a simple lunch date. His thoughtfulness showed in countless small ways: leaving surprise gifts on doorsteps or at workplaces, sending a joke to brighten someone’s day, or texting a beautiful photo from wherever he happened to be, just to say, “I’m thinking of you.” Al is survived by his siblings: Judy Acosta, Cynthia Barela, Fred (De) Martinez, Michael (Rosa) Martinez, and many beloved nieces and nephews who will carry forward his warmth, humor, and generous spirit. He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents; his parents, Alfonso Martinez, Sr. and Margaret Newton Martinez; his sister, Frieda Martinez; his niece, Krystal Barela; and his nephew, Ezekiel Barela. Alfonso W. Martinez, Jr. will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and loved eternally by all who knew him. His life was a celebration of connection, kindness, and curiosity, and his memory will continue to inspire smiles, stories, and love. Celebration of Life services will be announced at a later date.

Al was a patient of mine who I enjoyed working with. We would talk about food and football, which made our sessions fly by. Rest easy my friend. This was an untimely and unfortunate surprise. You will be missed.

Al wand I both worked for AT&T only he worked in San Ramon and I worked in Fresno. We worked interdepartmentally talked to each other just about everyday like so many of us who do this never meet. Al and I lost our jobs with AT&T,our last message to another dept was to each other to exchange numbers. We met at Treasure Island and took off to San Francisco area to have one very fun day. We laughed all day with our silly antics like singing to canned music outside a restaurant in the Embarcadero where tourists stopped thinking we were buskers We stayed in communications since then through social media and text. I will miss him giving me a bad time about my hats l always wear
