Our beloved Tyler James Atherton, age 29, went into the arms of the Lord on Thursday, May 29, 2025, in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, after an ongoing chronic illness. He was born July 15, 1995, in Hobbs, New Mexico to Darrell James and Tina Louise (Black) Atherton.
After graduating from Cleveland High School in Rio Rancho in 2014, Tyler earned his degree in mechanics from Universal Technical Institute (UTI) in Phoenix, Arizona. He had a lifelong love for all things automotive — especially classic cars — and always dreamed of working in the field. He spent several years as a technician before transitioning into a role as an auto claims adjuster. Cruising with the top down in his 2002 Corvette was his happy place.
Tyler also had a deep passion for music, particularly the sounds of the ’70s and ’80s. He often joked that he was born in the wrong decade. His home was always filled with music, laughter, and the occasional spontaneous dance move.
He had a special bond with animals, and none more so than with his cherished four-year-old Dachshund, Frankie. Tyler adored and spoiled that pup beyond words. Whether they were playing together or going for long walks through the neighborhood, Frankie was never far from his side.
Tyler’s heart for others defined him. To Tyler, a stranger was just a friend he hadn't met yet. From cashiers to coworkers, neighbors to waitstaff, Tyler had a way of connecting with everyone he encountered. While he often said he wasn’t a great conversationalist, he had the rare gift of being a great listener. He genuinely loved hearing people’s stories and lifting their spirits. He was an encourager at his core — always talking others up, finding the best in them, and offering words of kindness that lingered long after he walked away.
He loved and valued his church family at Expound Bible Church in Albuquerque, where he found deep spiritual encouragement and connection. His faith was a quiet, steady strength in his life.
Tyler held his family and friends closest to his heart. His hugs for his mom and dad were generous and unending. His bond with his brother, David, was one of best friends — marked by inside jokes, support, and a mission to bring each other joy. He loved all his family and friends deeply, including his grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. His love was truly unconditional — a steady light in the lives of those around him.
One of Tyler’s favorite phrases was, “Not with that attitude.” It perfectly captured his good-natured humor and his relentless optimism. How much better he made the world, especially for anyone lucky enough to know him.
He is survived by his parents, Darrell and Tina (Black) Atherton; his brother, David Atherton and wife, Serenity; paternal grandparents, Lyle and Terry (Goins) Tucker; James (Jim) Atherton and wife Diane, and their children Brittany and Anthony; aunt, Jennifer (Atherton) Rochon and her son Gage; uncle, Jeffrey Tucker and his son Isaac; and uncle, Sean Atherton and his son Logan. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Larry and Mary (Deisher) Black.
Services will be held on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Expound Bible Church, 3200 Coors Blvd NW, Suite #0, Albuquerque, NM 87120.
We will always carry your memory, your kindness, your love, and your amazing sense of humor in our hearts.
